In this tightly contested match both teams suffered late withdrawals so the match was played over 15 boards. Steven Jones (GMC) was promoted to baord 3 and again won against higher-rated opposition, but GMC's remaining top boards fared poorly. Another GMC player to win was Harry Brooks, while Ian Lamb and GMC's new player Howard Hughes (Chorlton) drew against higher rated opposition. James Thomson (Notts) benefited from a missed opportunity in a sharp Benko Gambit against GMC's new "signing" Richard Fox (Bolton). Other games went into endings: Dave Pardoe (GMC) was two pawns adrift with knight and three pawns against knight and five. Although Dave fancied his drawing chances because Marcel Taylor (Notts) had isolated doubled rook-pawns, but the Manchester man eventually had to admit defeat. Damian McCarthy (GMC) was on the defensive with black in a Sicilian and John Tassi (Notts) built a good attack but the winning tactics eluded him. After the smoke cleared, Damian had the advantage in a rook and multiple pawn ending. Eventually Damian's outside-passed pawn was secured victory, but Nottinghamshire emerged ahead 8-7.
