Ameet Ghasi wins Blitz and Rapidplay

IO Alex Holowczak (left) congratulates IM Ameet Ghasi (right) winner of the 2018 MCCU Blitz and the MCCU Rapidplay Championships held at Holiday Inn Birmingham-Walsall on 17 and 18 February. Thanks to Alex and Tom Thorpe for pic.

Ameet also won the Special prize for the highest aggregate score in Blitz and Rapidplay 17 out of 18 possible points.

 

1st IM Ameet Ghasi (Grantham Sharks) 8½ points from 9 games; 2nd GM Keith Arkell (Halesowen/Cheddleton) 8 points; 3-4th Dong Bao Nghia (Vietnam) and Henrik Stepanyan (Sutton Coldfield) 6½ points. Rating prizes were won by Henrik Stepanyan, Philip Zabrocki (Telford Telepost) and junior Manvith Sandhu (Warks Juniors)

Over 40 players participated in the event where the time control was 3 minutes plus an increment of 2 seconds per move from move 1.

Rapidplay

Time control in all sections was 15 minues plus 10 seconds increment from move 1.

In the Open section IM Ameet Ghasi again triumphed with 8½ points from 9 games. Placed 2-3rd were GM Keith Arkell and Tomasz Syngowski (Sutton Coldfield) on 7½ points. The best performance prize was won by thirteen year old Kishan Modi (Leics Juniors) who scored 4 points.

Under-2000 Rapidplay. The winner was J Morgan Blake (Warwick University) with 7 points. Second placed was Nathanael Paul (Newport Shrops) on 6½ and 3-4th were Craig Kennedy (Scotland) and Philip Zabrocki (Telford Telepost, Shrops) on 6 points. The best performance prize was won by Oliver Stubbs (Downend & Fishponds).

Under-1750 Rapidplay. The winners was Paul Doherty (Bolton, GMC) with 8 points. John Conway, 6½ points was second and Ben Marlow (Throw in the Tal 4NCL) was third on 6 points. Steve Crockett (Redditch, Worcs) won the best performance prize.

Under-1500 Rapidplay. First prize went to Andrey Molchanov (Coventry Univ, Warks) who won all 9 games. Second placed was Don Curry (Halesowen, Worcs) on 7 points and third was 7-year-old Arjun Vadgama (Warwickshire Juniors) on 5½ points. The best performance prize was won by Bernard Klingher (Barbican 4NCL).
