Chess organisations in the British Isles

  • English Chess Federation. Probably the most complete repository of information about English Chess with international chess news, UK congress calendar, ECF grading list, and links to county chess associations, chess clubs, organisations for Arbiters, Problemists, End Game Studies, chess for Blind and disabled players. Any chess congress or chess club that sends information to their webmaster will get a free entry for your event or club with a link if you have a website.
  • National Chess Junior Squad. News about the national squad,
  • Four Nations Chess League. Respected British Isles league for teams that play weekends in hotels including rounds held at Hinkley Island, Leics and at Telford, Shrops in the MCCU area. The league also has competition for juniors and there is an online team competition.

    • chess.com By far the largest chess game website. A basic free registration allows you to play opponents anywhere in the world, and get access to results and commentary about leading events and puzzles. Paid for subscription gets more including tutorials.
    • Lichess Favoured by European players and completely free with no annoying adverts or 'nags'. It allows play against opponents worldwide. Several variant versions of chess are supported. Leading events are shown with live boards and commentary.
    • PlayChess Online server from the people who wrote the Fritz chess computer programme.
    • Internet Chess Club Based in the USA, it has a free basic membership as well as a paid for subscription service for access to tutorials.
