Match report from Worcestershire

Nottinghamshire came to Water Orton armed with a combination of experienced and young improving players. Notts won 9-7. The games were keenly contested, but in most Notts had an edge. Peter Banks put Worcestershire in the lead with a lightning victory inside twenty minutes. Although Worcs maintained this point margin for some time, Nottingham players' superior positions eventually told. For Worcestershire, 3 games stood out. Ashley Davis continues to impress with his win. He sacrificed his extra piece to go into a winning endgame. Rob Bricknell (Worcs) never looked like giving up his opening advantage and pressed until his opponent caved in. Francis O'Gorman (Worcs) played a clever game as black keeping his king in the centre on the 7th rank and then opening the h file to activate his rooks.

This result means Nottinghamshire become worthy MCCU u-140 Champions. Nottinghamshire meet Surrey in the quarter-finals of the National stage of the competition on 22 May. Worcestershire come third in the MCCU table and play a preliminary round in the National stage against Sussex on the 17th April.
