Match report from Jon Lonsdale. Gtr Manchester faced a strong side from Warwickshire. Alan Beresford quickly drew with the black piece on top board. On board 2, Chris Smith (Warks), who was already behind in development, accepted a poisoned pawn (Qxb2). Jon Londale (GMC) increased the pressure, but probably missed chances for a bigger advantage. Eventually Jon regained the pawn after an exchange of queens and a draw was agreed. Other GMC players also missed chances. Although Graham Phythian (GMC) was two pawns down in a double rook ending, he had fantastic compensation with active rooks harassing deeply into his opponent's position ands an advanced passed-pawn. The winning manoeuvre, however, eluded him giving John Asbury time to advance his extra pawns. Jade Stirrup, Evan Wood, Julian Clissold and Cory Hazelhurst were playing for GMC for the first time this season. Julian and Cory both won extra pawns in their games, which they duly converted to wins. On Board 4, Dave Pardoe (GMC) had the white side of an Albin Counter Gambit with both sides fighting for the initiative. Dave secured more space and chances in the middlegame. Exchanges led to an unbalanced ending with Phil Bull (Warks) having rook, bishop amd six pawns against White's two rooks and four pawns. The position probably offered equal chances but Dave found his King in a mating net. John Lonsdale, although disappointed with the results said: "Overall an interested match."
