A much improved Manchester team took on a reinvigorated Worcestershire team, but the match started badly for the northerners because their board 8 had an accident and was unable to travel. After over three hours play, Manchester were still a point behind with 9 games finished. Worcestershire then increased their lead, but Manchester fought their way back to even the score with one game to go. The final game on board 9 saw Mark Bethel, Worcestershire, convert a middlegame advantage by exchanging to a minor piece ending where his opponent's knight was paralysed. Unable to hinder the march of Bethel's king side pawns to promotion, black resigned to give Worcestershire victory. The board 2 game score has been published on the English Chess Forum.
