Match report from Giles Stanton. Organising a team two weeks before Christmas was a challenge for both captains, and Staffs came off worse. With Worcs outgrading Staffs on all boards and having a one point start the outcome looked promising for the home side. But, Staffs' top three boards nearly extinguished Worcs' dreams. In most of the other games Worcs had the advantage. Maureen Clark (Worcs) set a trap winning a piece and the game. Ian Ellis (Worcs) gained two pawns and forced a fine finish leaving his queen en prise and mating his opponent on the back rank. Worcestershire number 6 then lost concentration when a piece up giving back the material and the attack to Brian Birchall (Staffs). John Gittus (Worcs) was in full control having won a piece in the opening. He converted by giving it back in the end game leaving himself with two connected outside past pawns ripe for promotion to hand victory to Worcs.
