With two boards remaining, Leicestershire had a 1 point lead, as the gathering dark night closed in. The result depended on boards 4 and 5. Both games were on a knife edge, but Leicestershire got a draw on board 4 in what looked a fairly level position, with Mick Connor just a move short of promoting a key pawn. On board 5, Paul Kirby had a real tussle, pushing through for a second queen, which unfortunately he could not hold. With clocks ticking down to the final minutes, Phil Harlow also promoted to a queen and held on for the win. The battle on the other boards was equally keenly fought, and 8 draws resulted from the 16 boards.
